Shared Capital Era Ends After 10 Years

As of June 2, 2024, Hyderabad has officially ceased to be the joint capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This separation marks an important milestone for the two Telugu states, nearly a decade after their bifurcation in 2014. According to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act of 2014, Hyderabad was designated as the shared capital for both states for a period not exceeding ten years.

No Permanent Capital Yet for Andhra Pradesh

With the shared capital arrangement ending, Andhra Pradesh currently does not have a permanent capital city. Although Amaravati was proposed as the planned capital, disputes over the location are still pending in courts.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy has indicated that if his government remains in power, the state's administrative capital could be in Visakhapatnam, the legislative capital in Amaravati, and the judicial capital in Kurnool.

Symbolic Milestone, Complex Realities

While Andhra Pradesh had already stopped using Hyderabad as its capital shortly after the bifurcation in 2014, retaining only a few buildings in the city, the latest separation holds symbolic significance for the two states. Political observers note that this milestone, while largely symbolic, highlights the challenges and complexities that come with the division of states and the creation of new administrative entities.

Debates Continue as State Operates Without Permanent Seat

For now, Andhra Pradesh continues to operate without a permanent capital city, as the debates over Amaravati, Visakhapatnam, and Kurnool persist. Only time will tell which city will ultimately emerge as the state's new seat of governance.
