All Eyes on Rafah: Global Outcry as Israel Intensifies Offensive in Gaza
ALL EYES ON RAFAH

“All eyes on Rafah”: This phrase has flooded social media as global support mounts for Palestinians in Rafah, a city in Gaza currently under intense military operations by Israel. Despite international condemnation, Israel has continued its offensive, which it claims is a limited operation targeting Hamas militants in the region.

The city of Rafah, located in the southern part of Gaza, has been under severe attack since early May. On Sunday, Israel launched an intense strike on Rafah, hours after Hamas fired a barrage of rockets at Tel Aviv, most of which were intercepted. The Israeli strike targeted a displacement camp, killing at least 45 people and injuring 200 others. Israel's military stated that the attack aimed to eliminate two senior Hamas operatives but sparked a fire that led to significant casualties. The attack has been widely condemned as a massacre.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referred to the strike on the camp as a "tragic mistake," but this did little to quell the global outrage. Various countries, including the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar, have condemned the attacks and called for Israel to take precautions to protect civilians. Egypt described the attacks as part of a systematic policy aimed at making Gaza uninhabitable, while Jordan accused Israel of ongoing war crimes.

Around one million people have fled Rafah since the offensive began, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The agency reported that these individuals are struggling to find safety amid continuous bombardments and dire living conditions, with limited access to food, water, and sanitation.

Despite a ruling from the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Friday ordering Israel to halt its military operations in Rafah, the offensive continues. The ICJ called for an immediate cessation of actions that could lead to the physical destruction of Palestinians in Gaza. However, Israel has vowed to press on, arguing that the operation is necessary to dismantle Hamas infrastructure and eliminate fighters.

In a historic and symbolic move, Spain, Ireland, and Norway officially recognized a Palestinian state on Tuesday. This recognition aims to support a two-state solution, with a unified Palestinian state comprising the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem as its capital. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez emphasized that this state must be viable and unified under the legitimate government of the Palestinian national authority.

Israel has condemned this move, arguing that it bolsters Hamas, which launched a surprise attack on Israel on October 7, resulting in over 1,170 Israeli deaths and the taking of 252 hostages. In response, Israel's retaliatory offensive has killed at least 36,050 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry.

The ongoing conflict has reignited the debate over Palestinian statehood and the need for a two-state solution. While Israel insists that an independent Palestinian state would undermine its security, many of its allies argue that a two-state solution is essential for lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
